Erosion Study Available The
author of a new guide on combating the erosion of beaches and dunes spent a lot
of his research time on the golf courses at St Andrews. H
R Wallingford recognised that beach erosion affected not only the natural heritage
and local environment but also business and recreational developments such as
golf courses. Many defences against
erosion can alter the natural features of coastlines, stabilise or obscure formerly
dynamic habitats, and reduce or impede sand supply to nearby shores. They may
also have problems blending into the natural environment, particularly in rural
locations, and may require periodic alterations to remain effective. In
visiting a number of sites around the Scottish coastline, including St Andrews,
Wallingford analysed the current problems and laid down guidelines for those involved
in coastal zone planning. His guide is
available from Scottish National Heritage Publications, Battleby, Perth PH1 3EW.
